Chicago, IL – Torrential rain is causing widespread flooding concerns across parts of DuPage County, as a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 9:15 p.m. Monday evening. The storm system is particularly affecting Aurora, Naperville, and surrounding western suburbs, where up to 2 inches of rain per hour has already fallen, and more rain is expected.
Heavy Rain Causes Flash Flooding Risk
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, radar and rain gauges detected intense storms dropping 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour in southern DuPage County. The Flash Flood Warning includes Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook, and Wheaton, with additional rainfall potentially causing rapid flooding in these areas.
Driving Hazards and Flooding in Low-Lying Areas
Emergency managers are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, as creeks, drainage ditches, and underpasses may flood quickly. Roadways such as Interstate 355 near Downers Grove and Route 53 near Bolingbrook are at higher risk for standing water.
“Never drive into flooded roadways,” officials warn, emphasizing the dangers of even shallow floodwaters.
Flooding May Affect Homes and Businesses
Flooding could also impact homes and businesses in low-lying neighborhoods near Lisle, Darien, and Glen Ellyn. Residents are advised to move valuables off basement floors, check sump pumps, and remain alert for rising waters.
Stay Alert as Flash Flood Warning Remains Active
The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 9:15 p.m., but additional warnings may be issued if the storms persist through the evening.
