Flash Flood Emergency Issued for Parts of North-Central Illinois, 2-3 Inches of Rain Per Hour

DeKalb, ILTorrential rain is sweeping through parts of north-central Illinois, with flash flooding becoming a growing concern in DeKalb and Lee counties. Slow-moving storms are dumping up to 2 to 3 inches of rain per hour, especially in towns like Shabbona, Compton, and Paw Paw, where streets and low-lying areas could soon become impassable.

Flash Flood Warning in Effect Until 8:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 8:30 p.m. for several towns, including Sandwich, Hinckley, Waterman, Amboy, and Lake Holiday. The intense rainfall and slow-moving nature of the storms are raising concerns about potential flooding in these areas.

Already Reported Flooding and Rising Water Levels

Localized flooding has already impacted rural roads, with water quickly rising near Woodhaven Lakes and Lee Center. Emergency officials advise residents to stay away from underpasses, low spots, and areas where water is collecting. Even shallow water can pose a danger by stalling vehicles or washing them away.

“Flash flooding develops quickly and can be deadly if ignored,” emphasized emergency responders.

Evacuate If Necessary and Move to Higher Ground

Residents living along streams or creeks are strongly urged to move to higher ground immediately to avoid potential life-threatening flooding. As conditions continue to develop, the warning may be extended if storms persist or more rainfall accumulates.

Stay Informed and Take Precautions

Emergency officials are urging the public to stay alert for updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency managers. This storm system is continuing to move through the area, and more flooding could occur as the night progresses.
