Lexington, KY – Torrential rain struck the Lexington area early Tuesday afternoon, prompting a Flash Flood Warning from the National Weather Service that remains in effect until 4:15 p.m. The intense downpour has already delivered 1 to 2 inches of rain across central Fayette County, with another inch expected before the storm system clears.
Dangerous Flooding in Key Neighborhoods
Radar indicated heavy thunderstorms impacting vulnerable low-lying areas, triggering flash flooding near creeks, streams, and underpasses. Some of the most affected neighborhoods include:
- Northland
- Thoroughbred Acres
- Chevy Chase
- U.K. Arboretum area
Residents in nearby zones such as Bryan Station, Meadowthorpe, Cadentown, and Cardinal Hill have also been warned to stay alert as water levels can rise rapidly.
Officials Warn: Do Not Drive Through Water
Local emergency officials have issued urgent warnings to drivers:
“Turn around, don’t drown.”
Most flash flood-related fatalities occur when vehicles attempt to cross water-covered roads. Barricades have been set up in flood-prone streets, and authorities stress that no one should attempt to bypass them.
Lingering Rain Could Worsen Conditions
Meteorologists say the rain will continue into the afternoon, heightening the risk of:
- Road closures
- Power outages
- Flash flooding in poor drainage zones
Officials also caution that if storms stall or strengthen, additional weather alerts will likely follow later in the day.
Flash Flood Warning Active Until 4:15 p.m.
The current Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, though the situation could change rapidly depending on storm movement.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and prepare to take immediate action if conditions worsen.
