MAMMOTH, Wyoming — The sport utility vehicle carrying five people veered off the road and into an inactive geyser at Yellowstone National Park, allowing the people to flee into a hot and acidic pond, park officials reported on Friday.
After the collision on Thursday morning, the passengers managed to escape the 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) water on their own. Park spokesperson Morgan Warthin stated in a statement that the passengers were transferred to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Warthin, the road was blocked for around two hours on Friday while the SUV was retrieved from nine feet of water.
After a significant eruption in 1922, the Semi-Centennial Geyser has not been active since. It is situated between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction, close to Roaring Mountain.
Officials from the park stated that the event is still being looked into and did not disclose the names of individuals involved.
