WSMV/Gray News, Lexington, Tennessee – Fire Chief Joseph Lynn Murphy passed away, and the Henderson County Fire Department in Tennessee is in grief.
He was sixty-two.
Murphy passed away on December 20, according to the department, a few days after experiencing a cardiac attack. Chadd Gilliam, the administrative district chief for the Henderson County Fire Department, said that occurred Tuesday night, just 24 hours after Murphy had responded to an emergency call.
He was lovingly known as Murphy by the people he worked with and the community he served. He served Henderson County for decades of his life.
Murphy began working in emergency services as a youngster at Henderson County Fire Department Station 3 before rising through the ranks to become the district chief, according to his obituary.
He was chosen to be Henderson County’s fire chief in 1977, a position he held until his passing. In addition, he presided over the Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association as its president.
According to his obituary, one of his greatest accomplishments was the Get Alarmed initiative, which provided free smoke detectors to Tennessee residents.
A few days prior to Christmas, the chief passed away.
Murphy’s custom of preparing Christmas breakfast was reported by the Henderson County Emergency Management Agency.
Officials from emergency management and the fire department honored his custom on Monday morning.
Murphy’s funeral took place in the Lexington High School gymnasium on December 27.
