As of Wednesday, a sheriff’s deputy from Miami-Dade County, Florida, was being held by the federal government on two counts of child exploitation.
A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida said that Carle Miranda Blum, 51, a deputy with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, was charged with receiving visual depictions of the sexual exploitation of minors and producing visual depictions of the sexual exploitation of minors. Blum was accused of making sexually explicit videos and sending them back and forth with a 17-year-old girl she was seeing.
Blum was accused of recording herself doing illegal things with the girl who was too young to understand what she was doing and of driving across state lines to see her. Blum is said to have threatened to kill the girl when the “relationship” fell apart.
An independent news outlet, WPLG, got a copy of a criminal complaint that said the sheriff’s office got a tip on July 14 that Blum was seeing a girl who was too young to be with him. The girl was detained under the Baker Act before she could board a flight to Miami, the day after she turned 18. This was all part of the complaint. Blum got her bags back at the airport.
The witness told the police that the girl’s mental health “had significantly deteriorated” during the year that she was allegedly seeing Blum.
When police got their hands on the teen’s phone, they allegedly found a lot of disturbing videos of Blum with the girl, including two videos that showed Blum “violently choking” the teen.
After looking into the messages that Blum and the girl were said to have sent each other, police thought that they were “romantic or sexual in nature.” Blum is said to have “continuously provided a ‘count down'” to the girl’s 18th birthday and promised to marry her, calling her “wife.”
According to the complaint, Blum and the girl had been messaging back and forth since February. The girl sent Blum explicit photos and videos. Blum is said to have sent texts that were almost violent, like one that said, “I really need to RAPE your a—.”
When things got bad in the relationship and the girl tried to end it, Blum is said to have acted very violently. It said, “Leave me alone and see what happens.” “I will f—ing put my favorite knife through your throat and watch you die slowly,” said someone else. “I swear by my grandparents.”
According to the complaint, the police learned that Blum was going to fly up to Atlanta, Georgia, to see the girl once she was released from the hospital. On Wednesday, Blum was caught in Atlanta.
Police in Miami-Dade County said the charges were “very disturbing” and “a betrayal of the badge, the public trust, and the oath we swear to uphold.” Stutz said, “The actions alleged stand in direct opposition to everything we represent as law enforcement officers and as human beings.”
