SUMMIT COUNTY, UT– A peaceful camping trip turned violent when a Utah father and his young daughter were assaulted by a group of individuals in Summit County. Authorities say the father was beaten unconscious, and the daughter was traumatized after witnessing the brutal incident unfold.
The attack occurred near Smith and Morehouse Reservoir, a popular remote area for backcountry recreation in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the assault happened late Saturday night, July 27, when the victims’ secluded campsite was overrun by multiple men who appeared intoxicated and aggressive.
Attack Leaves Father Hospitalized
In an official statement, deputies explained that the suspects approached the father and daughter unprovoked. When the father confronted them for their erratic behavior, they responded with violence—knocking him unconscious with multiple blows to the head and upper body.
- The daughter, under 12, was left to seek help from nearby campers
- Paramedics later airlifted the father to a trauma center for emergency treatment
- His current condition has not been made public
“This was a completely senseless and violent act,” Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright said. “The victim was simply out camping with his daughter when he was ambushed by an aggressive group.”
Public Tip Helps Identify Suspects
Within 48 hours, Summit County investigators identified three suspects thanks to public assistance. Authorities say the men are believed to be from out of the area and had been camping nearby while partying and drinking heavily.
The Sheriff’s Office publicly thanked citizens who came forward with information, which included vehicle descriptions and photos posted to social media.
- Arrests are pending as investigators finalize witness statements and forensic evidence
- Charges expected include aggravated assault, child endangerment, and public intoxication
“We are committed to pursuing justice for this young girl and her father,” said Sheriff Justin Martinez on Facebook. “No one should feel unsafe enjoying Utah’s outdoors.”
Community Reacts, Safety Concerns Rise
The incident has sparked growing concern among Utah outdoor recreation groups. Many are calling for increased ranger patrols and stricter alcohol policies in public-use wilderness areas.
A local nonprofit, Keep Utah Wild, issued a statement urging families to remain cautious while camping in isolated regions, especially during weekends.
