A family from Colorado says their happy ending is only half done because they found their dog at the Carthage Humane Society more than 750 miles away.
We learn more about how grateful they are to the local shelter for helping them find their dog and how they have new hope to keep looking for their second dog, who is still missing.
“Her brother is still missed.” “They went missing at the same time,” Elizabeth Heggestad said.
Even though the Heggestads are very happy that they found their lost dog Sedona in Carthage, hundreds of miles away, they still need to find a piece of the picture.
“We have such high hopes.” Two years have passed. We think we’ll find Diesel soon too if we can find her. “So the search for him goes on,” said Brandon Heggestad.
Even though they don’t know what Sedona’s been through the last two years, the Colorado couple’s faith has been restored.
“I’m not sure if I’m ready to find out.” There’s a chance I no longer care. I’m glad she’s back. He added, “And I just want to find Diesel.”
For now, Sedona is getting used to living the way she used to.
“She didn’t want to be with us after seeing our boys.” It took her a second to react when she saw those boys. When she heard our daughter say, “It’s Donut!” you could see her ears perk up, and she jumped on them and started to pet him. “They’ve been friends ever since we got her,” Elizabeth said.
Jenna Lightsey, a kennel tech at CHS, said, “She didn’t really respond to that name, Sedona, but she responded almost right away to Donut.”
Jenna, a kennel tech at Carthage, was there to see the meeting happen.
“Many people are calling it a Christmas miracle.” It is, too. Wonderful news for the family and for us at the shelter for Christmas. It gave me a lot of energy to keep going, fight, and do what I had to do for the dogs and cats, Lightsey said.
Even though the Humane Society has been having a rough time lately, the Heggestads give all the credit to the staff for helping bring Sedona home.
“Being aware of how well the shelter in Carthage looks after those pets and how much they love and care for them,” Elizabeth said.
“You know, this is what shelters are for.” And they show them how to do it right: check twice and be sure. “Like I said, I’m into that for life with them,” Brandon said.
Of course, things are still getting used to having their girl back home.
“She has some ticks now that she didn’t have when she was a puppy.” You know, some stress probably caused ticks. But I just…” Brandon spoke up.
“We can get through all of those.” She said, “They are all worth it because they are a part of her.”
But she’s changing, and the family feels better.
“The boys are pleased.” It’s been about two years since all four of us have slept through the night. We hope this gives a lot more people trust and hope that things like this can happen. According to Elizabeth, “it will happen to you if you think it’s just another day like any other.”
“We’re just regular people,” I promise there is nothing special. “Wow, this is amazing,” Brandon said.
It’s now time to bring Diesel home.
“She’s now at home.” He said, “We have one more to do.”
