Families in Greensboro Can't Bury Teens Who Died in a Crash Because Autopsies Aren't Ready Yet

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s one thing to lose a loved one, but Jeanean Chapman wishes she didn’t have to go through not being able to hold a funeral a week after they died.

Two other teens were killed in a crash on Greensboro’s Walker Avenue on July 17. Kenyan Saxton was one of the teens killed.

Chapman said, “We had to tell our family from other places to put off making plans to come. Some of them had already booked their flights, so they had to cancel.”

The 14-year-old boy Brandon Bowie was also killed in the crash, and his family says that his funeral has been put off until the medical examiner finishes his autopsy.

For now, both families are asking for information on the investigation.

“The police haven’t said anything.” “The medical examiner has only told us that there are too many bodies, and they haven’t even looked at the boys yet,” Chapman said.

After the accident, Greensboro police said in a news release that on July 17 at 2:15 a.m., an officer saw a car going the wrong way on West Market Street at East Lake Drive and tried to pull the driver over.

People started chasing the driver because he wouldn’t stop and kept going at a high speed. In the 3900 block of Walker Avenue, the suspect car hit one of the PD cars that came to help.

Three people inside the car died. At the time, two 14-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy were named. One police officer was in the patrol car that was hit and was seriously hurt when they were taken to the hospital.

When we asked the NC State Highway Patrol about the case, they sent us this message:

Even though the case is moving forward, three families still can’t bury their children, and Chapman says Kenyan’s mother can’t be at peace until more information comes out.

“I feel like I’m dreaming,” a mom in Greensboro says after her son dies in an accident.

“That’s not funny at all…” The man said, “I’ll stay here as long as I can to help her get through it.”

A balloon launch will be held at Hairston Middle School on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. to honor all three kids.

For both families, GoFundMe pages have been set up to raise money.
