Extreme Heat in Jackson: Feels-Like Temps Could Hit 120° on Thursday

Thursday, Mississippi will be hit by a dangerous heat wave. In some parts of the state, the temperatures will reach 110 to 120 degrees, which could be life-threatening.

The National Weather Service in Jackson says that a Level 3 Significant Heat Stress alert will cover most of central and western Mississippi. This includes Jackson, Vicksburg, and Brookhaven. The actual temperature of the air is predicted to be higher than 100 degrees. This will greatly raise the risk of heat-related illnesses and heat stroke, especially for people who work or exercise outside.

In the eastern parts of the state, like Meridian and Philadelphia, the risk is Elevated (Level 2), which means that temperatures will be in the upper 90s and the heat index will reach 110. People who live in these areas should stay inside if they can, avoid being outside for long periods of time, and drink a lot of water.

The body will be pushed to its limits by the heat and humidity, especially in cities where it may be harder to get cool air. Never, ever leave pets or kids in cars, even for a short time. This amount of heat had not been seen in the area since the extreme heat event in July 2021.
