Driver Arrested in Sullivan County After Short Pursuit; Drugs and Loaded Gun Seized

Sullivan County, IN – A brief vehicle pursuit in Sullivan County on Tuesday afternoon ended with the arrest of a local man and the seizure of drugs and a loaded handgun, according to authorities.

Deputies from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling on County Road 600 N for multiple traffic violations around mid-afternoon on September 9. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old John H. Taylor of Shelburn, ignored emergency lights and sirens, prompting a short chase onto US 41 and finally onto Mill Street in Shelburn. Taylor eventually surrendered without further incident.

Drugs and Weapon Found During Search

During a probable cause search of the SUV, deputies discovered approximately 30 grams of suspected alpha-PHP, commonly known as “bath salts,” along with methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and packaging materials.

Authorities also reported that Taylor, classified as a serious violent felon, was found in possession of a loaded handgun inside the vehicle.

Charges Filed

Taylor was taken to the Sullivan County Jail and faces multiple charges, including:

  • Dealing a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance – Level 2 Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon – Level 4 Felony
  • Possession of Methamphetamine – Level 5 Felony
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – Level 6 Felony
  • Resisting Law Enforcement – Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Class C Misdemeanor

“These charges carry significant penalties,” the sheriff’s office stated, highlighting the seriousness of the case.

Officials reminded local residents that law enforcement continues to actively monitor areas for illegal drug activity and that anyone in possession of controlled substances or firearms illegally should expect swift action.

The sheriff’s office also emphasized the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement, noting that vehicle pursuits not only endanger suspects but also other drivers and pedestrians along the route.
