Williams, IN – What started as a routine call about an aggressive dog escalated into a significant drug arrest and the capture of a wanted fugitive in Lawrence County on Friday, December 12, according to local authorities.
Law enforcement officials say a complaint involving a loose pit bull in a residential area ultimately led deputies to a camper where a man wanted on a felony parole warrant was found along with a substantial amount of illegal drugs and paraphernalia tied to drug distribution.
Complaint About Aggressive Dog Triggers Response
The incident began when the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting an aggressive pit bull in the 200 block of Dogwood Acres in Williams, Indiana. The caller told deputies the dog had wandered onto their property, growled, and bared its teeth, causing concern for safety.
Sheriff Greg Day and Special Deputy Ronnie Blackburn were dispatched to investigate the complaint. Upon arrival, deputies followed information provided by the caller and neighbors, which led them to a nearby camper believed to be connected to the dog.
Contact Made at Camper
When deputies reached the camper, they made contact with a woman at the scene. According to the sheriff’s office, she identified herself as the girlfriend of Claude David Swartz, 49, of Bedford.
During the interaction, deputies learned that Swartz was wanted on an active felony parole warrant, prompting officers to further investigate the situation.
Fugitive Taken Into Custody Without Incident
Law enforcement officers entered the camper and located Swartz inside. Authorities say he was taken into custody without incident, and no injuries were reported during the arrest.
Officials noted that Swartz did not resist and complied with deputies as they executed the arrest based on the outstanding parole warrant.
Drugs Spotted During Arrest
While taking Swartz into custody, deputies reportedly observed a small amount of methamphetamine and a glass pipe in plain view inside the camper. Based on those observations, officers sought and obtained a search warrant to further examine the residence.
The warrant was executed with assistance from the Indiana State Police and the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, according to officials.
Search Reveals Large Quantity of Meth and Drug Paraphernalia
During the search, deputies discovered a significant cache of illegal substances and items commonly associated with drug distribution. Authorities reported finding:
- Approximately 40 grams of methamphetamine
- Opiates
- A loaded hypodermic syringe
- Digital scales
Law enforcement officials stated that the quantity of methamphetamine and the presence of scales were consistent with intent to deal, rather than personal use.
Charges Filed Against Suspect
Following the discovery, Swartz was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where he was booked on multiple charges. According to jail records and the sheriff’s office, the charges include:
- Felony parole warrant
- Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deal
- Possession of Methamphetamine Over 28 Grams
- Possession of a Hypodermic Syringe
Additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues, officials said.
Dog Secured, No Further Threat Reported
Authorities confirmed that the pit bull involved in the initial complaint was safely secured at another residence. No further issues related to the animal were reported following the incident.
Deputies emphasized that the dog complaint was handled appropriately and that public safety concerns were addressed promptly.
Authorities Highlight Unpredictable Nature of Calls
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office noted that the incident highlights how seemingly routine calls can quickly turn into serious criminal investigations.
“This case is a reminder that even minor complaints can uncover dangerous situations,” officials said, adding that deputies remain vigilant during every response.
Law enforcement continues to encourage residents to report suspicious behavior, unsafe conditions, or concerns in their neighborhoods, noting that community cooperation plays a key role in preventing crime.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials did not release additional details about the woman found at the camper or whether she may face charges. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say more information may be released as it becomes available.
Residents with information related to drug activity or other criminal behavior in Lawrence County are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
