GenevaThe British doctor who oversaw the United Nations’ response to some of the most significant health emergencies in recent years, such as the coronavirus pandemic, Ebola, and avian flu, Dr. David Nabarro, passed away.
On social media platform X, World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus verified Nabarro’s passing.

Tedros wrote on Saturday that David was a smart, giving mentor to many people and a tremendous advocate for health justice and global health. Numerous lives all throughout the world were impacted and touched by his work.
In 2023, Nabarro was knighted for his work as the WHO’s COVID-19 representative. His focus on hunger and health issues earned him the award.
Later that year, he quit the United Nations after losing the election to Nabarro.
The strategic director of the 4SD Foundation, a social organization based in Switzerland that trains the next generation of leaders in global sustainable development, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday. Additional information was not immediately available.
The organization posted on its website on Saturday that it will deeply miss David’s kindness and persistent dedication to bettering the lives of others.
His wife, Flo, five children, and seven grandchildren are among the survivors.
