New Orleans, LA – A tragic shooting unfolded Tuesday evening in New Orleans, leaving a devoted father dead while he waited to pick up his child at a church day care. Authorities have identified a 23-year-old suspect, Raymond Wells, who remains in critical condition after also sustaining a gunshot wound.
Shooting Incident in Church Parking Lot
Around 5 p.m. Tuesday, New Orleans Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 3600 block of Bienville Street. First responders discovered multiple cars with bullet damage and Carl Morgan, 36, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Morgan was pronounced dead in the back parking lot of a church and nursery at 3400 Canal Street.
Suspect Identified and Arrest Warrant Issued
NOPD Chief of Detectives Nicholas Gernon confirmed investigators quickly linked the shooting to a carjacking attempt. Using automatic license plate recognition, police traced Morgan’s vehicle and found Raymond Wells inside, suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Wells was transported to a local hospital and is reported in extremely grave condition. Despite this, authorities secured a first-degree murder warrant against him.
Possible Motive and Investigation
Gernon stated Wells had been “up to something in that block,” possibly breaking into nearby vehicles before the deadly encounter. Witnesses reported that Wells fired on individuals for unknown reasons before approaching Morgan, who was simply picking up his son from nursery. Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of Wells’ shooting.
Remembering the Victim
Morgan worked as a sous chef at Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans. Friends and colleagues described him as a devoted father whose child was the center of his world.
“What was most important was his son and how much of a dad he was,” said Christian Pendleton, General Manager at Brennan’s Restaurant.
Community Shock and Safety Reminder
This incident has left the local community shaken. Authorities continue to canvass the area and appeal for any witnesses to come forward. Police emphasize vigilance in parking lots and public areas, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such violent crimes.
