Saharan dust is causing trouble in Florida!

The United States has been at risk of hurricanes due to environmental issues

, but Florida is known for its hurricane activity, it even has a name for the period they occur, the hurricane season. This meteorological phenomenon has its peak from June to November and it can be affected by a dust cloud coming from the Sahara desert and it is believed to be reaching the United States, in particular Florida. So, does this mean Florida will increase its number of hurricanes?

This Saharan dust is not dangerous, but we will see there are some negative consequences.  Well, let’s find out about that and what is this Saharan dust.

What’s this Saharan dust?

As its name suggests, it is dust coming from the Sahara desert, Africa. It is not just simple dust, but it is a huge cloud of this dust. This cloud is basically a huge amount of thin and dry dust, created by the strong winds there.

This Saharan dust crosses the Atlantic Ocean until it reaches the Caribbean, Central America and southern states like Florida, Texas and Louisiana. This dust cloud is so high that you will be surprised… it can reach up to almost 10,000 feet high on its journey! Can you imagine witnessing that? How scary that would be.

Authorities on this phenomenon

According to the

National Hurricane Center (NHC)

in the United States, this Saharan dust will arrive in Florida on the 30th of May. Even though this is a common thing to happen every year, this one is catching authorities’ attention because it will arrive when the hurricane season starts in the Atlantic Ocean, from the 1st of June to the 30th of November.

This coincidence makes authorities think this season will be an active one. It is expected to cause up to 19 high intensity storms and 10 of them could become hurricanes.

Negative consequences of this dust

Although it is not dangerous, it might have some consequences like affecting the tropical Atlantic climate particularly. Let’s see what this Saharan dust is capable of.

One of the things is that it can hold back the creation of hurricanes, because they need warm and humid air and the Saharan dust carries dry air. So, hurricanes don’t have the elements they need to form themselves.

This arrival of dust can be a risk for some people, but it is not a big thing. As the atmosphere can be too foggy with a brownish and grayish color tone, it can be an obstacle for our sight and if you are driving you might have an accident, for example. Also, some people suffering from asthma or any chronic lung disease could have some reactions on their eyes or throats and difficulties to breathe.

Some recommendations when this dust arrives

Even though you don’t suffer from any of the health issues previously mentioned, you should be careful with this Saharan dust. Here, there are some recommendations you should follow to protect yourself.

Due to the amount of dust in the air, you should stop doing exercise outside if you feel some difficulty when breathing. Also, you should close your windows at home to avoid this dust going inside. Of course, if you or anyone near you feels serious symptoms, don’t hesitate to go to a hospital.

Sometimes we tend to take these things not very seriously because it isn’t something dangerous for the majority of the population. What’s more, we even experience them as if they were a show or something similar and we start recording what we are seeing, instead of protecting ourselves.

Have you ever witnessed Saharan dust in your area? If that’s not the case, you should follow the recommendations whenever it happens.
