Community Rallies to Help 9-Year-Old Boy Replace Lost Prosthetic Leg in Record Time

A grandma in Texas is thankful that her online fundraiser for her grandson who lost his prosthetic leg in the Gulf of Mexico got so much support.

Monica Swindall tells PEOPLE that her family’s trip from Waco to Galveston on July 28 was meant to be a fun family vacation.

What broke her heart, though, was when her disabled 9-year-old grandson Jayce lost his leg while he was excited to go swimming.

Because Swindall wanted to help, he wrote about what happened in a Facebook group for his area in the hopes that someone would be able to find it. With the start of the new school year coming up quickly, the Swindall family knew Jayce would need a new replacement leg right away. Because of this, she set up a GoFundMe on July 31.

Monica talked about calling Stability Prosthetics in North Texas on the fundraiser site. They did what they could to help the family, Monica said.

“They are only charging us $7,000 for a new one and I know it should be a lot more,” she said. The Washington Post says that prosthetic arms usually cost between $5,000 and over $50,000.

Swindall went on to say that Jayce’s parents, who are happy to announce they are going to have a baby soon, found it even harder to pay for the replacement.

Lucky for the family, the fundraiser quickly surpassed its $7,000 goal, which will allow Jayce to get a new limb.

Swindall tells PEOPLE about the online support, “It happened so quickly, in just five hours.”

Jayce is now ready to start the new school year.

Monica says, “Everyone was so great.” “It broke my heart to see my grandson without his leg and my son upset about it.” We made it through, though. Things are going to go well. “God is good,” I’ll say it again.
