MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — On Saturday, there was a shooting in Myrtle Beach that was said to have started over a parking disagreement. A man from North Carolina has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting.
Myrtle Beach Police Capt. Christopher Starling told News13 on Sunday that 44-year-old Anthony Maurice Garner of Albermarle was caught on one count of murder and one count of having a weapon during a violent crime.
Records show that Garner will have a bond hearing at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Myrtle Beach Municipal Court.
Sunday, Tamara Willard, the chief deputy coroner for Horry County, said that Cedric Reddick, 31, of Columbia, died at the scene of the crime after being shot multiple times.
The event took place in the 2300 block of North Ocean Boulevard just before 11 p.m. News13 heard that people saw the body in the road.
On Sunday afternoon, Mayor Brenda Bethune told News13 that a fight over parking went violent.
“It’s just sad that some people choose to use violence to solve something as simple as a parking fight.” “That takes away from what Memorial Day is really about,” Bethune said.
Authorities said that several people have been arrested as part of the investigation, but they did not give any other information at this time.
Bethune said that the violent outburst was a rare event in what has been a good start to the summer tourist season in the city’s official start.
Bethune said, “We’ve had so many people in town with so few problems.” “In the two nights I’ve been out, the crowd has been really well controlled and polite.”
It’s not the first time that killings have happened on the Grand Strand on one of the busiest weekends of the year.
Sandy Gaddis Barnwell was shot and killed on Ocean Boulevard over the Memorial Day weekend in 2014. The murder case has still not been solved.
News13 reported in 2021 that two people were hurt in the area over the holiday.
Anthony Griffin, 20, got a long jail sentence in January after pleading guilty to assault and battery in connection with a 2020 shooting on Ocean Boulevard that was related to gangs.
And the suspect who was caught in a shooting in the same area in 2023 that went popular on social media was later not allowed to post bond.
News13 has asked the Myrtle Beach police for more information about what happened on Sunday and will share any new information on-air or online as it comes in.
