Colorado Braces for Flooding — I-25 Corridor Under Flash Flood Watch Today

Heavy rain this afternoon along the I-25 corridor is making travel in southern Colorado more dangerous because of the risk of flash floods. The risks are largest from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo says that a Flash Flood Watch is still in place for most of the southern and eastern mountain areas today. Cities like Pueblo, Walsenburg, Trinidad, Alamosa, and La Junta are on watch because of heavy rain that will get worse in the evening and storms that will last into the night in some places.

Flash flooding can happen in low-lying places, along creeks, and near burn scars when it rains a lot in one place. Sometimes it’s dangerous to drive during rush hour, especially on Highways 160, 50, and I-25. It is expected that thunderstorms will start in the mountains west of Alamosa and Salida and move east to El Paso and Las Animas counties by late afternoon.

To stay safe, people should stay away from flooded roads, have backup power or charging options ready, and keep an eye out for possible flood alerts. Due to the high amount of moisture in the air, even weak storms could cause water to run off quickly.

The Flash Flood Watch will stay in effect until 10 p.m., and more updates will be made if the situation gets worse.
