The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department says that a man who was running from police after reportedly killing his 15-year-old brother with an axe was caught Thursday on a high school football field during a scrimmage game.
When 24-year-old Zuberi Sharp was arrested, William Garcia was at a dance performance at Newbury Park High School.
William Garcia told NBC Los Angeles, “They’re on lockdown, and we were in the middle of the performance. The performance is going to be late because of this.” “All we thought is that there’s a streaker on the campus.”
Sharp is the son of Calvin Sharp, a murderer who was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two extra life terms for killing a 6-year-old boy with a meat cleaver in August 2007.
It’s still not clear what led to the brutal attack on Thursday.
Around 8 p.m. that night, a woman called 911 and screamed that her child had been killed, so police and firefighters went to a house near the school, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ken Truitt told reporters. Truitt says that Sharp’s brother Zayde Keohouho, who was a teenager, was hit with an axe and died on the way to the hospital.
“I can confirm that the person who died was our 15-year-old grandson Zayde,” his grandpa, Gary Keohouho, said in a statement on Friday night. “We are grateful for all the love, support, prayers, and aloha that our friends and ohanas in this great community have shown us.”
Calvin Sharp, who is now 45 years old, is in prison after being found guilty of killing Sev’n Molina, the son of his ex-girlfriend, and trying to kill her and her neighbor with a cleaver when they tried to stop him. At the time, Calvin Sharp, who was about 27 years old, told police that XM Satellite Radio had sent him notes telling him to kill Sev’n and his mother, Sandra Ruiz, by stabbing them. The Los Angeles Times says that Zuberi Sharp and Sev’n Molina went to the same preschool.
Maeve Fox, who used to be a deputy district attorney and prosecuted Calvin Sharp fifteen years ago, said that Zuberi Sharp’s arrest came as a total surprise to her.
She told the Times, “As soon as I saw the news this morning, I thought, You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Sharp was nabbed on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail, according to jail records. His lawyer has not yet been named in court documents. He is going to be arraigned on Monday.
