Police in Illinois say that a detective was killed while on duty after reacting to a report of a suspect leaving a bank with a gun.
Police in Oak Park, Illinois, say that detective Allan Reddins was shot in the left side when he went to the scene of a call about an armed suspect who was leaving a bank. The suspect has not been named.
“The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence,” the department said in a release.
After being called to the bank for a report of an armed person, Reddins was found shot.
The police were first called to the area because someone said someone armed was leaving the bank, the department said in a release.
At 9:36 a.m. local time, the Oak Park Fire Department was called to the bank because shots had been fired. When they arrived, they saw that Reddins had been shot in the left side.
Another shot was fired at the suspect, who was then caught by cops. The police did not say who shot the suspect.
The suspect was taken to Loyola University Medical Center after the crime, along with Reddins, according to the police. At 10:10 a.m., Reddins was declared dead, but the suspect is still in stable condition, according to police.

It was announced that Reddins, 40, was sworn into the Oak Park Police Department in May 2019. He was born in Chicago and lived in Oak Park.
“Redins’ death marks the first death on the job for the Oak Park Police Department since 1938,” the report said.
