Central New York Flash Flood Warning Issued for Five Counties Sunday Night

Binghamton, NY – The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Flash Flood Warning Sunday evening for parts of central New York, including Cayuga, northern Cortland, southwestern Madison, southeastern Onondaga, and northern Tompkins counties. The warning remains in effect until 9:30 p.m., as heavy rain and thunderstorms threaten the region.

Storms Bring Risk of Flash Flooding

Radar detected additional storms moving through the warned area around 8 p.m., with up to an inch of rain possible, according to the National Weather Service Binghamton. Officials warned that flash flooding is either already occurring or expected to develop quickly, particularly in small creeks, streams, low-lying areas, highways, and underpasses.

Urban flooding is likely, creating hazardous travel conditions across the affected counties.

Communities at Risk

Residents in Cortland, Homer, Groton, Tully, Moravia, La Fayette, and Lansing, as well as visitors to Taughannock Falls State Park, are advised to seek higher ground and avoid travel if possible. Emergency officials emphasized that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles and repeated the familiar guidance:
