Central Illinois to Face Storms and Gusty Winds Overnight, Cooler Temps by Wednesday

Springfield, ILCentral and southeast Illinois are set to experience scattered thunderstorms overnight, with gusty winds and heavy rain expected to cause brief flooding and potential slowdowns on I-55 and I-72. The National Weather Service in Lincoln warns residents to expect unsettled weather before a cooler air mass arrives midweek, bringing a welcome drop in humidity.

Thunderstorms to Sweep Across the Region

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms will begin moving into the area late tonight, continuing through early Tuesday morning. The storms could produce localized downpours and wind gusts strong enough to down small branches. In addition, low-lying areas may experience brief flooding.

Winds could gust up to 40 mph, adding to the storm’s intensity, and travelers are urged to remain cautious while driving through affected areas.

Cold Front to Bring Relief by Wednesday

Temperatures will remain muggy tonight, with lows in the low 70s, but a cold front arriving on Tuesday will bring much-needed relief. By Wednesday, temperatures will be in the low to mid-80s, with a noticeable drop in humidity, making it feel more comfortable across the region.

On Tuesday, morning storms will gradually clear, but afternoon temperatures will still climb into the upper 80s and low 90s.

Improved Weather Expected Midweek

By Wednesday, central Illinois will experience partly cloudy skies and seasonable temperatures, with highs reaching the low to mid-80s. With lower dew points and reduced humidity, the region will enjoy a cooler, more comfortable day, with temperatures expected to stay mild through Thursday and Friday.
