Caribou, ME Weather Alert: Winter Advisory Remains in Effect Until 7 AM as Snow Continues

Caribou, Maine – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Caribou area through 7 a.m. Tuesday, as ongoing snowfall continues to affect far northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service.

Winter Weather Advisory Details

The advisory covers Northwest and Northeast Aroostook counties, including Caribou and surrounding communities. Forecasters say additional snowfall of up to 2 inches is possible early Tuesday, bringing total storm accumulations to between 2 and 6 inches. The Saint John Valley is expected to see the heaviest totals.

Current Conditions Early Tuesday

As of early Tuesday morning, conditions at Caribou Municipal Airport included light snow and fog with temperatures around 28 degrees. Winds near 16 mph were producing wind chill values near 21 degrees. Visibility may be reduced at times due to falling and blowing snow, especially across open and exposed roadways.

Travel Impacts and Safety Concerns

The primary impacts include slippery, snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and hazardous travel during the Tuesday morning commute. Untreated and secondary roads are expected to be most affected as snowfall continues through the early morning hours.

Drivers are advised to:

  • Slow down and maintain extra following distance
  • Allow additional stopping time
  • Use caution on bridges and rural roads
  • Check local road conditions before heading out

Short-Term Forecast

Snow showers are expected to taper off later Tuesday, leaving cloudy skies with daytime highs near 22 degrees. Cold air will remain in place through midweek, with Wednesday highs around 12 degrees and overnight lows near 1 degree. Wind chills could drop below zero during overnight and early morning hours.

Looking Ahead

Another chance of light snow is forecast Wednesday night into New Year’s Day, though accumulations are expected to be minor. By the end of the week, much colder air will move in, with Friday highs near 7 degrees and overnight lows around 5 degrees below zero.

What Residents Should Know
