Police say that a mother from Northern California was killed by dogs on a walking trail where a pack of 25 Great Danes were free.
A neighbor found Davina Corbin’s badly bitten body on Blackhawk Trail in Feather Falls just before 2 a.m. Thursday, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
There were “numerous bite marks and injuries” on Corbin’s body, and DNA matching household dogs were all over her clothes. The office says that a medical expert found that she died because of an attack by a family dog.
As the sheriff put it, she was found on the trail in front of a house while 25 Great Danes were running free.
The dogs were taken into the care of Butte County Animal Control after investigators got a search warrant and “spent the whole day capturing” them.
The sheriff’s office said that the DNA of the dogs that attacked Corbin will be matched to DNA found on her clothes and body to figure out which dog or dogs did it.
Corbin’s premature death was seen as a tragedy by his neighbors because it could have been avoided.
Max Heckler, who lives near the walking trail, said that he and other neighbors have told Butte County Animal Control more than once about the barking dogs.
He told the local station KCRA, “Nothing has been done about it until now.” “Wait until those dogs kill someone.” That was a terrible accident that should never have happened.
He said that he had almost been eaten by the big dogs himself.
Heyler said, “The Great Danes come across the road here at me.” “I got in my car and drove off.”
He said that animal control should have taken care of the problem as soon as they got the call.
“What I mean is that animal control is just as much to blame for that death as the dogs were.” He told the news station, “They didn’t do anything about any of this.”
“That makes me mad.” “That woman should not have died.”
Butte County Animal Control told KCRA that they got two calls about loose dogs and worries about the animals’ health and diet, but no reports of aggression.
People in the area say Corbin lived near the Blackhawk Trail and would walk along it a lot. The dogs are thought to have attacked her while she was walking on the trail.
Her family has set up a page to raise money for the funeral fees.
“It’s hard for us to accept this loss, and we need help saying goodbye,” her son Justin Corbin wrote on the GoFundMe page.
As of Tuesday, no charges had been brought because the probe is still going on.
