NEW YORK – A woman is facing many charges after colliding with a family out on a walk in Brooklyn, killing the mother and her two children in what New York City Mayor Eric Adams called as a “tragic accident of Shakespearean proportion.”
Miriam Yarimi was accused hours after the Saturday afternoon crash with three counts of criminal negligence homicide, manslaughter, and second-degree assault, among other things.
Yarimi was driving with a suspended license, and additional accusations indicated she was speeding and failing to yield after stopping at a red light when she crashed with another vehicle and subsequently hit a family crossing in the crosswalk.
“I’ll say it like it is. “This was a horrific tragedy caused by someone who should not have been on the road,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters at the incident site. “A mother and two young children are killed. Another child is fighting for his life. “A family and a neighborhood are devastated.”
A phone number for Yarimi could not be located. Calls to the Kings County courts went unanswered, and there was no information in the court system regarding who might represent her.
Tisch reported that Yarimi’s Audi rear-ended a Toyota at 1 p.m. Both drivers sustained minor injuries, as did another adult and three children in the Toyota. Yarimi had to be retrieved from the wreckage of her vehicle after it flipped.
The Audi collided with pedestrians in the crosswalk before overturning, according to officials. The 35-year-old woman and her 6- and 8-year-old children were pronounced dead on the spot, while the 4-year-old son was hospitalized in critical condition.
“This is extremely concerning and painful, not only to the City of New York in general but specifically to a very close knit community,” Mr. Adams added. “A mother out on a routine stroll on a lovely day was hit and died. As we pray for their families and the entire community, the city mourns their loss.”
