Bronx Woman Dies After Being Beaten by Hospital Roommate, Suspect Still at Large

THE BRONX, NY – A 55-year-old Bronx woman died after being beaten by her hospital roommate, who reportedly has a history of assaulting staff and patients, authorities say. The victim, Cynthia Vann, succumbed to her injuries on September 27, more than two weeks after the assault at NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln.

Fatal Assault in Hospital Room

Vann was admitted to Lincoln Hospital for an underlying medical condition when the attack occurred around 3 a.m. on September 10, according to the NYPD. The suspect, 44-year-old Racquel Haughton, allegedly punched Vann multiple times in the head while she was asleep, leaving her in critical condition and requiring intubation in the ICU.

The medical examiner later ruled the death a homicide due to blunt force trauma.

Suspect’s History of Violence

Law enforcement sources indicate that Haughton has a documented history of attacking people in hospitals. She allegedly assaulted a nurse in July and, following the fatal incident, attacked a patient care associate on September 11, reportedly slapping the associate and asking, “Why did you squeeze my hand so hard?”

Court records show Haughton was arrested and charged in both prior incidents and was released without bail for the July case. When she was brought to central booking after the September 11 assault, she reportedly assaulted a fellow inmate. Both cases remain pending.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns

Authorities are still searching for Haughton, who disappeared while the Bronx District Attorney’s Office was investigating the homicide and waiting for hospital evidence.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of hospital patients and the ability to manage emotionally disturbed patients with violent histories in shared rooms.

Hospital Response and Family Statement

NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln could not be reached for immediate comment. The victim’s family has declined to comment, but sources say they are seeking justice for Vann’s death.
