NASHVILLE, Tenn. Bowman works for school nurses and teachers all over Tennessee. He said they are afraid that some parents won’t sign the waiver, which means school staff won’t be able to give medical care because of the new law.

This session, the Families’ Rights and Responsibilities Act was signed into law. It needs permission from a parent before a student can get medical care at school or any public health center. However, if a child is having an emergency, this rule does not apply.
Rep. Jeremy Faison, a Republican from Cosby, spoke about the bill during the congressional session. “This bill, Mr. Representative, is a bill that makes it official that parents really do have the right to decide what their children do with their lives,” he said.

Physicians for Educators of Tennessee’s J.C. Bowman says that you should sign any medical waivers that your school sent home. “The most important thing is for them to sign the form.”
The people who are sponsoring the bill say that it does not force schools to do anything. They are also open to any changes that could make the law better in the future. Still, Bowman is worried about what might happen to the school workers.
Bowman said, “If you break the law and you are a doctor, nurse, or other health care worker, you can lose your license. It can be taken away, suspended, or not renewed.”
