There is a prize of up to $150,000 available from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for information about two suspects who are thought to have robbed a 24-year-old USPS letter carrier at gunpoint and stolen the keys to every mailbox in an Augusta area apartment complex.
Police say the theft happened at 3461 Jonathan Circle in Augusta on November 13 just before 5 p.m.
A report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says that two male suspects stopped the postal worker while he was handing out mail while holding a gun to his chest.
The two men asked for the keys to his post office car and his “area keys,” which, according to the report, open mailboxes at “every apartment complex in the area.” The postal worker told the police that he didn’t know how much the keys were worth but that they were “very expensive.”
The suspects are said to have run off toward Marvin Griffin Road. The sheriff’s office later found and took back two cars. The inspection service said that people who know about the suspects shouldn’t try to catch them themselves.
