Athens Man Arrested After Drug and Firearms Seized During Henderson County Search

Athens, Texas – A Wednesday afternoon investigation by Henderson County narcotics officers led to the arrest of an Athens man after deputies discovered drugs, firearms, and cash at a residential property, according to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators identified the suspect as Russell Kent Hambrick, 65, of Athens. Authorities said the arrest followed a coordinated search conducted by narcotics investigators and sheriff’s deputies at a property in the 200 block of Palmetto Avenue.

Search Conducted by Narcotics Investigators

According to officials, the search took place at approximately 1:37 p.m. as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. Deputies focused on both the residence and multiple vehicles located on the property.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that evidence recovered during the search indicated suspected drug distribution activity.

“During the search, investigators located multiple controlled substances, firearms, and currency believed to be connected to narcotics activity,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Drugs and Weapons Found in Vehicles

Authorities said several items were discovered inside one of Hambrick’s vehicles. Investigators reported finding multiple baggies of marijuana that were prepackaged for sale, along with multiple firearms and a large amount of cash.

Additional evidence was located in one of Hambrick’s pickup trucks, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies said they recovered suspected methamphetamine stored inside a plastic container, as well as small plastic baggies and digital scales.

Officials noted that such items are commonly associated with drug distribution operations rather than personal use.

“Investigators also recovered digital scales and packaging materials, which are often used in the distribution of narcotics,” the press release said.

More firearms and additional cash were reportedly found during the continued search of the vehicles on the property.

Arrest and Charges Filed

Following the discovery of the drugs, weapons, and related items, deputies arrested Russell Kent Hambrick at the scene. He was taken into custody without incident.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Hambrick faces multiple charges, including:

  • Manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Unlawfully carrying a weapon
  • Possession of a prohibited substance and items in a correctional facility

Officials did not specify the bond amount or whether Hambrick has since been released from custody. Court records will determine the next steps in the case.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities stated that the investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as the case moves through the legal process. The sheriff’s office did not indicate whether additional suspects are being sought or if further charges could be filed.

Officials emphasized that narcotics investigations often involve extended surveillance and coordination among multiple law enforcement units to address drug-related activity within the community.

Community Safety Reminder

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage residents to report suspicious activity and to work with law enforcement to help reduce drug-related crime in the area. Deputies noted that illegal drugs and unsecured firearms pose serious safety risks to neighborhoods.

Anyone with information related to suspected narcotics activity is urged to contact local law enforcement.

Case Status

Hambrick remains charged pending further court proceedings. All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Residents with concerns about drug activity in their neighborhoods are encouraged to share information responsibly with authorities.
