An investigation is underway in Arizona following a multi-vehicle incident on Interstate 10, which killed at least six people and injured more than a dozen.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, just before 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, troopers responded to a crash on I-10 westbound around milepost 89, west of Tonopah, involving multiple tractor-trailers and passenger automobiles.
Following the incident, several vehicles caught fire, according to officials. Officials first stated that four individuals had died, but by late Saturday evening, the number had risen to six.
In addition, 13 persons were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries.
The westbound lanes had been closed but have now reopened.
However, the eastbound lanes remain closed, and there is no expected time of reopening. The National Weather Service office in Phoenix issued three Dust Storm Warnings in the area around the time of the incident, but it’s unclear if that’s what caused it.
