Arizona woman charged after allegedly slashing boyfriend’s throat while he slept, police say

Mesa, Arizona – Authorities in Mesa are investigating a violent Thanksgiving night attack in which a woman allegedly slashed her longtime boyfriend’s throat as he slept, then called 911 to report what she had done. According to newly released court records, the suspect made several disturbing statements to officers, including that she “hoped he was dead” and had planned to stab him in the heart.

The incident unfolded at an apartment complex on South Country Club Drive, where police were dispatched just after 8 p.m. Thursday. Officials say 52-year-old Tamala Rudeseal admitted attacking her boyfriend with a large folding hunting knife, which officers later recovered at the scene.

What police say happened

According to investigators, the victim told officers he had been asleep when the attack occurred. He woke up to intense pain as his throat was cut and managed to apply pressure using a shirt until police and emergency crews arrived. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Authorities say he is expected to survive.

Court documents state that Rudeseal called 911 immediately after the stabbing and made several incriminating statements both to dispatchers and responding officers. She allegedly told investigators, “I did just try to murder you,” recounting what she says she said to her boyfriend. She also reportedly declared, “Today is my Independence Day.”

Disturbing statements to officers

During her interview with police, Rudeseal allegedly told investigators, “God, I hope he is dead,” and claimed that killing him would be a “favor” to herself, his wife, and his children. According to the documents, she also said she had planned to cut the other side of his neck and then stab him in the heart.

Police noted that the couple had been together for approximately 11 years, and the victim told officers she often becomes depressed around the holidays. He also said they had argued earlier in the day before he went to sleep.

Charges and bond

Rudeseal was arrested at the scene and has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. As of Monday, she remained in custody on a $1 million bond.

Authorities have not released a clear motive for the attack, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Holiday-related mental health concerns

Incidents involving emotional instability and violence often rise during the holiday season, according to law enforcement agencies nationwide. Stress, financial strain, unresolved conflict, and seasonal depression can all contribute to heightened tensions within households.

Mental-health professionals also note that holiday-related depression tends to peak for individuals experiencing loneliness, relationship strain, or long-term emotional challenges. Police encourage families to seek help early if they notice escalating warning signs.

Community safety reminders

Authorities emphasize that anyone who feels unsafe or at risk of harm in a relationship should reach out for assistance. Local police departments, crisis hotlines, and community organizations offer resources for people experiencing domestic violence or emotional distress.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For non-emergency help, local domestic-violence support centers can provide confidential guidance and safety planning.
