ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – When Albuquerque cops went to a Walmart incident in April of this year, they found that a camera had caught what they were saying.
On the lapel camera, you can hear a cop say, “They never turned my f camera off.”
There are racial slurs and praise of violence in the talks that happened right after police killed Mark Benavidez, 30.
In the video, a cop is heard saying, “If it means you shoot some of them, so be it.”
Police were called to the Walmart near Wyoming and Menaul because they thought two thieves were there. One of them turned out to be Benavidez in the end. Benavidez got into a fight with police officers when they tried to arrest him as he left the store.
During the episode, Benavidez was seen taking an officer’s gun and shooting it into the ground several times. A gun was used to kill Benavidez.
“I like getting into fights with violent people,” a police officer said on the video. “That’s the reason I became a police officer.” I did not come to help old women who can’t cross the road. I want to remove real jerks who are doing bad things from the street.
It’s not clear who is talking in the video, but they don’t hold back.
As the sound gets harder to understand, you hear someone say, “Got to get a savage.”
Additionally, no one knows who the cops are referring to; however, they use the slur again a short time later.
“What’s going on over there?”… (unheard) wild animals… You hear a police officer say, “It’s getting out of hand.”
Then, one of the cops being filmed talks about how his son is dating a Native American woman.
“One of my son’s dates is an Isleta native.” He said, “She gets the check, and he gets a free trailer and some land down there for a farm.”
