Alabama Woman Sentenced for Deadly Hit-and-Run That Killed Man Checking His Mail

Bessemer, AL – A 56-year-old Alabama woman, Tammy Albanese, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Albanese, who was texting while driving, plowed into 55-year-old Teddy Eugene Self as he was “checking his mail” in September 2022.

The Fatal Incident

The tragic incident occurred on September 22, 2022, at around 2:15 p.m. on Lock 17 Road in Bessemer, Alabama. Teddy Self, 55, was crossing the street to collect his mail when Albanese, driving her black Ford F-150, struck him while texting on her cellphone.

Self was pronounced dead less than 15 minutes later, according to first responders. Despite the fatal crash, Albanese fled the scene, leaving Self’s lifeless body behind.

Investigation and Arrest

Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office began their inquiry by reviewing Albanese’s cellphone records, which revealed she was texting while driving at the time of the crash.

A tip from the public eventually led authorities to Albanese. She was arrested on September 28, 2022, and charged with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death.

Conviction and Sentencing

Albanese entered a guilty plea on Monday, where she was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with parole eligibility after three years for manslaughter. In addition, she received a 10-year sentence for leaving the scene, with two years to serve before parole eligibility.

Albanese is scheduled to be transferred to state prison this week after entering her guilty plea.

Safety and Accountability

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of distracted driving, especially texting behind the wheel. Law enforcement urges drivers to avoid using their phones while driving and to remain aware of their surroundings, especially in residential areas where pedestrians, like Teddy Self, are at risk.
