MONTGOMERY, AL—
There will soon be a new law in Alabama that will make it harder to sell people.
On April 17, Gov. Kay Ivey signed House Bill 42 into law. It is called the Sound of Freedom Act.
The governor’s press office says it will make Alabama’s rule against trafficking in persons the strictest in the United States.
The new rule says that anyone found guilty of first-degree human trafficking will have to spend the rest of their life in prison if the victim was a child.
“Law enforcement all over the country has had a hard time keeping up with the people who want to hurt and take advantage of innocent people through human trafficking.” “Sadly, we’ve seen cases like this happen right here in Alabama, where human traffickers still break our laws without a second thought,” Gov. Ivey said.
“A line must be drawn in the sand, and Alabama now has the harshest punishments in the country for anyone found guilty of first-degree trafficking of a child.” They will have to spend the rest of their lives in jail. These bad guys will have to give that a lot of thought before they try to hurt kids in our state.
The Sound of Freedom Act will start to work on October 1, 2024.
