Detroit, MI – A statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect through Monday night as Canadian wildfire smoke continues to drift south, blanketing Michigan cities with haze and unhealthy air. Officials urge residents—particularly those with respiratory conditions—to limit outdoor activities and keep windows closed.
Hazy Skies Blanket the State
From Detroit to Grand Rapids, a thick layer of haze is impacting visibility and reducing air quality. According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the smoke is expected to linger through Monday, especially along key corridors such as I-94 and I-96.
“Sensitive groups should stay indoors as much as possible while air quality levels remain unhealthy,” warned state health officials.
Mild Start to the Week, But Storm Chances Ahead
Monday will bring seasonable temperatures with highs in the low 80s across Michigan. A 20% chance of scattered rain or thunderstorms arrives late Tuesday into Wednesday, though most areas will remain mainly dry until midweek.
Lows overnight will dip into the upper 50s, offering slight relief from the daytime warmth.
Rising Humidity to Create Muggy Conditions
Starting Wednesday, residents across Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Traverse City will begin to feel increased humidity, with muggy and sticky conditions expected to peak by Thursday and Friday.
“We’re entering a classic late-summer pattern—hot, humid days with limited relief at night,” noted meteorologists at the National Weather Service.
Highs are forecasted to climb into the mid-80s, while overnight lows will remain in the low to mid-60s, particularly in southern and central Michigan.
Health Precautions Advise
With lingering smoke and rising temperatures, state officials are encouraging the public to take the following precautions:
- Avoid strenuous activity outdoors, especially midday
- Run air conditioners with clean filters
- Use N95 masks if you must go outside
- Check on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children
The Air Quality Alert may be lifted after Monday night, but additional advisories could be issued depending on future smoke patterns from the Canadian wildfires.
