Aftershocks Continue Near Indio After 4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern California

Indio, California – Aftershocks are continuing to shake the Indio area days after a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday evening, rattling homes and businesses across a wide region. According to the USGS, the latest aftershock activity remains strong enough to be felt but has not caused significant damage.

Early-Morning Aftershock Felt Near Indio Hills

On Wednesday around 12:30 a.m., a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck nearly six miles northeast of Indio Hills, the USGS reported. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage linked to the early-morning tremor.

Residents in the surrounding areas reported light shaking, consistent with aftershock patterns following a larger seismic event.

Series of Aftershocks Recorded Tuesday

Seismologists recorded multiple aftershocks throughout Tuesday, ranging from magnitude 2.8 to 3.6. While smaller in size, these earthquakes were strong enough to be felt by residents but were not expected to cause major structural problems, experts said.

Such aftershocks are common following moderate earthquakes and can continue for days or even weeks.

Monday’s Earthquake Shook a Wide Region

The original 4.9-magnitude quake struck just before 6 p.m. on Monday and was powerful enough to knock items off store shelves in some locations. Eyewitnesses described sudden jolts and rolling motion as the ground shook.

Viewers from Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and as far south as San Diego reported feeling the earthquake, highlighting how widely the shaking was experienced across Southern California.

No Injuries or Major Damage Reported

Despite the strength of the quake and subsequent aftershocks, officials confirmed there were no reports of serious injuries or major damage. Emergency services remained on alert as seismic activity continued to be monitored.

Experts Say Quake Was Region’s Largest in Months

Earthquake expert Lucy Jones said the 4.9-magnitude event was the largest earthquake to hit Southern California in nearly a year, making it notable even though it did not cause widespread destruction.

Seismologists say residents should remain cautious, as aftershocks can continue unpredictably, though the likelihood of a significantly larger quake decreases over time.
