Police say a guy killed a 35-year-old mother and her 4-year-old daughter and have arrested him.
In Louisiana, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said on social media that Daniel Callihan, 36, was arrested on June 15 for “committing brutal and heinous acts of violence” in the deaths of Callie Brunett, 35, and her daughter Erin, 4.
“Our hearts go out to everyone who was hurt by this terrible event.” “These are atrocities that words can’t describe,” Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said in a statement. “We ask everyone to keep Callie’s family in your prayers.”
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade told the press that two young children were the subject of an Amber Alert on June 13. The warning was sent out after Brunett was found dead in her Loranger home and her two children were missing, according to CNN. Chief Jimmy Travis of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Wade said that Jackson police and U.S. Marshals finally found Callihan in Jackson, Mississippi, which is two hours from Tangipahoa. They found him in the woods behind a house and arrested him “after a short pursuit.”
Wade said that Jackson cops searched the area where he was found and “found a deceased child in the woods.” That child was Erin, who was 4 years old. And he said that the crime scene was “very traumatic” and “very tragic.”
“… That’s not something you want to see. WVUE-TV reports that Wade told the press at the press meeting, “As a father, to see this baby on the ground who has died,” “This is a sweet 4-year-old boy who is no longer with us because of what a coward did.”
Wade said that police were still trying to figure out the “manner of death” of the 4-year-old. He also said that the other child, a girl who was 6 years old, was found and “taken to the hospital to receive treatment” for her injuries.
CNN says that he also said there were signs of “some human trafficking done” in the woods area where the girls were found. “A scalpel will be used to work on this crime scene.” Wade told the news source, “It’s going to take a long time to process it.”
Travis said that the police think Callihan and Brunett dated “on and off.” CNN says that before he was caught, Callihan was wanted for questioning “for a domestic violence incident that happened at the time of the abduction and resulted in a murder.”
The police said they still didn’t know why the people were allegedly kidnapped and killed. According to the news source, Travis said that the next step is to talk to Callihan and the 6-year-old kid.
