A Shark Attacks a Swimmer and Bites Him in the Chest, Seriously Hurting Him. Del Mar Beach is Closed Because of the Attack

A 46-year-old man was attacked by a shark in Del Mar on Sunday morning. He was part of a group of ocean swimmers who regularly train in the waters north of San Diego. Because of this, the beach city has blocked water access until later this week.

A statement from the city of Del Mar said the attack took place in the water off of 17th Street around 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The victim was bitten in the chest, left arm, and hand, and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was being treated for injuries that were described as serious but not likely life-threatening.

Lifeguards started putting up signs telling swimmers and surfers that they couldn’t go into the water at beaches less than a mile away from where the attack happened.

Officials say the water shutdown will last until Tuesday at 9 a.m.

People who were swimming or surfing were not allowed in the water at another beach in Southern California last week because of what officials called “aggressive shark behavior.”

That attack took place in San Clemente over Memorial Day weekend. A shark pushed a surfer off their board.
