Nine people were shot on Saturday at the summer attraction in Michigan, including a couple who took their infant and toddler along and shielded them from the insane gunman’s bullets.
Around 5 p.m., shots were fired inside the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad near Micayla and Eric Coughlin’s house, wounding both of them while defending their 2-year-old and 7-month-old daughters.
A family friend wrote on GoFundMe that the couple, who reside in Rochester, were shot seven times in all during the horrific incident.
The post says, “They walked to the splash pad shortly after getting ice cream, and they weren’t even there for a minute when Micayla and Eric heard gunfire.” “They each grabbed a child to protect them, trying to save their own children.”
The two were taken to a hospital and are currently receiving treatment.
On the GoFundMe page, a family friend said, “Their children were protected and able to go home that evening because of their heroic actions.” “After this unimaginable tragedy, Micayla and Eric have a long and unknown recovery ahead of them.”
The fundraising has raised almost $20,000 as of Sunday night.
42-year-old Michael William Nash shot and injured the Coughlins and seven other park visitors. Nash committed suicide during a police confrontation.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the horrific gun violence left a 4-year-old child in stable condition after receiving a gunshot wound to the leg and an 8-year-old son gravely injured after being shot in the head, as reported by the Detroit News.
Related to the two children, a 39-year-old woman was also wounded in the abdomen and legs; on Saturday, her condition remained severe.
According to WXYZ, the other victims were all 30 years of age or older, one of them was a guy. Every one of them was in a stable state.
The wife of a city employee is among the victims, according to Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, who was present with 14 family members and friends, according to the Detroit News.
According to the site, Barnett stated, “[When I talked to her husband,] he was in shock, but he was grateful his family was OK and is focused on supporting them.”
