A car hit a 6-year-old girl and her older sister as they crossed the street in California. The girl died and her sister was hurt.
The accident took place at a crossroads in Pomona, a city about 30 miles from Los Angeles, on Tuesday around 8 p.m.
Pomona Police Department says that when they got to the scene, they saw two victims, a woman in her 20s and a girl in her 10s, lying “in the roadway.” Even though people tried to save her life, the child died from her injuries. The adult who made it out alive was taken to the hospital to get help.
“The driver of the involved vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation,” the Pomona Police said.
Reports from KTLA say the driver was a 19-year-old male in a silver Honda Accord. The outlet saw video of the driver taking a sobriety test at the scene of the accident. Police don’t believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in what happened. The local news source says that cops are looking into whether the driver was distracted or going too fast before the accident.
KTLA said that the victims were sisters: Guadalupe Alvarez Salgado, 6, an elementary school student, and Mireya, 19, who was in the intensive care unit (ICU) because of her injuries in the crash. Police did not share their names.
People who lived nearby, like Mathew Leal, told KTLA, “It shook me to my core.” „Even though we didn’t talk much, I felt like I saw her grow up. I’ve been here since she was born. I’m really sorry for their loss. We will always be there for them.
People in the neighborhood are worried about the dangerous intersection because of what happened: “A lot of people do speed here,” Leal said.
A GoFundMe page was set up by the family, and so far just over $1,267 of the $15,000 goal has been raised.
