Officials say that an inmate who went missing from a California jail camp almost 13 years ago has been caught in New York City.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) says that Eduardo Hernandez was arrested without a problem in New York on May 20, 2012. Hernandez had been missing from the Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun City since November 2011.
“Hernandez was sentenced to thirteen years for carjacking with an enhancement for use of a firearm,” the statement said, adding that Hernandez would be sent back to California and could be charged with escape.
“Since 1977, 99 percent of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended,” the CDCR said.
The 2011 escape of Hernandez was with Jose Padilla, another prisoner who is still on the run, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The guys were last seen early in the morning of November 15, 2011, and the newspaper says they got away while wearing orange jeans and shirts that said “C.D.C.R. prisoner” on them.
The CDCR website says that the Delta Conservation Camp’s “primary mission” is to “provide incarcerated fire crews for fire suppression in the Sonoma, Lake, Napa Unit, and Solano County areas.” The camp is in the Bay Area of California.
Hernandez was caught after another prisoner was caught after he escaped from the camp in the middle of May.
The CDCR says that James Xiong ran away from the Delta Conservation Camp on May 13. He had just been given a sentence of “one year and four months for possessing/owning a firearm by a felon or addict.”
Then, two weeks later, he was found in Monterey. The CDCR said that “officers had to use physical force and a taser to take him into custody.”
