According to news sources, a judge in South Carolina approved a $1.3 million settlement in the case of a bride who was killed by a drunk driver just hours after getting married.
Samantha Miller, 34, and her new husband Aric Hutchinson were riding in a golf cart when Jamie Lee Komoroski, 26, is accused of crashing her rental car into them on April 28, 2023, near Charleston, South Carolina.
Miller died in the accident, and Hutchinson was hurt very badly.
Two other people who were riding in the cart with Miller and Hutchinson were also hurt in the terrible accident.
WCSC reported that the deal money will go to Miller’s estate and the other people who were hurt.
The seven-figure award will be given to the bars that served Komoroski before the accident and the car rental company she used.
WCSC reports that Hutchinson and his lawyer Danny Dalton signed the deal in court on Tuesday. The settlement will give both sides $863,000 after fees.
Dalton said the amount was less than expected because Hutchinson and the mother of the dead bride, Lisa Miller, are still fighting over the bride’s estate. Miller is questioning whether Hutchinson and Miller were officially married.
She has fought with Hutchinson’s team over how much money she will get from the settlements. She has also asked the court to remove Hutchinson as the estate’s agent.
“The deceased, Ms. Samantha Miller, was killed in a driving accident,” Dalton told FOX Carolina. “Her husband, Mr. Aric Hutchinson, is with us.” He should be in charge of the business as the personal representative,”
Komoroski was arrested at the scene and charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death, reckless homicide, and two counts of felony driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury. He was reportedly going 65 mph in a 25 mph zone.
She got out of jail on bond in March, but her criminal case is still going on.
Komoroski is currently being held at home while she waits for her case to continue.
The restaurant where Komoroski worked at the time of the event is one of the other defendants that has yet to agree with the plaintiffs.
The golf cart that was going to crash went flying 100 feet and flipped over several times before it finally stopped.
Komoroski could spend anywhere from one year to twenty-five years in jail if he is found guilty.
