Many college students in Colorado were taken to the hospital overnight after overdosing at a fraternity house on a “possibly tainted batch of cocaine,” according to cops.
Boulder police are looking into the deaths after they were called to the Kappa Sigma house on Saturday between 10 and 10:30 p.m., according to a news release from the department.
Police say that preliminary information shows that at least six guys were taken to a hospital and treated by medical staff. The report says that one of the men’s “prognosis was initially grave,” but that he and the others are now in stable condition.
Police said that after more research, they found that the sick people had drunk booze and the allegedly tainted cocaine while they were at a party. The department also says that detectives are looking into whether the overdoses had anything to do with pledging at the club.
“The Boulder Police Department would like to remind the community about the dangers of illegal drug and alcohol consumption,” it says.
Kappa Sigma is no longer allowed on the campus of the University of Colorado Boulder.
CU Boulder has not recognized Kappa Sigma as a Greek chapter for almost 20 years. The group was kicked out of an unaffiliated interfraternity council in 2015 “due to violations over time involving safety and welfare concerns,” a university spokesperson told USA TODAY in a statement on Monday.
“CU Boulder’s Division of Student Affairs, Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) and the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) are working together to communicate with those directly impacted and provide support,” it says.
“We are also working closely with the Boulder Police Department to keep looking into the crime.” The Division of Student Affairs at CU Boulder will decide if any required punishments will be given.
