The family of a Texas woman who was freed from the hospital early Tuesday morning with only a bus pass said that she was later found dead.
KENS reported that Stephanie Troilo, 58, was last seen leaving Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio on Tuesday morning. The hospital is part of the Baptist Health System.
The San Antonio Police Department told USA TODAY Monday afternoon that her family reported her missing on Wednesday.
Her body wasn’t found until Sunday, according to KENS and KHOU. Her body was found in a creek two miles from the hospital where she had been released.
“She probably died after a medical episode,” her brother Chris said. “Police don’t think there was any foul play.” He told KENS that she might have had a seizure on Monday, which is what brought her to the hospital.
He said she didn’t know who she was when she was taken to the hospital because she was confused. The TV station also heard from her brother that Troilo took medicine every day, including medicine for seizures.
When she was freed, it was cold in the area, and she didn’t have much on her. This made her family worried.
“She was strangely let out of the emergency room at 5 a.m., given a bus pass, and sent on her way,” her brother told the news source. “That was the last time we saw her because, even stranger, she was sent home from the Northeast Baptist Emergency Room as a homeless person.”
USA TODAY sent emails, texted, and called the Baptist Health System on Monday, but they didn’t answer right away.
US TODAY asked the San Antonio Police Department how she was found and what killed her, but they said “an open investigation” meant they couldn’t say.
Family said the San Antonio woman was friendly and open
As Troilo’s brother put it, she had seizures and other mental health problems. Her family told KENS that she was also “strong and tough.”
Before her body was found, her brother said she was talkative, nice, outgoing, and social. He said she was good at making friends.
As Troilo’s family looked for her, they offered a $1,000 prize for information that would help them find her safely.
