An Iowa Woman Was Arrested on Suspicion of Trying to Poison Her Husband by Adding Eye Drops to His Drink

A woman from Iowa was arrested on charges that she tried to kill her husband.

CBS affiliate KCCI and NBC affiliate WHO-13 both report that Daisy Zantjer, 39, of Pleasantville, Iowa, is accused of putting eye drops in her husband’s drink twice in July 2023.

News sites say she has been charged with two counts of giving out dangerous drugs and two counts of domestic violence.

WHO-13 says the husband told the Pleasantville Police Department about the suspected poisoning.

Reports of poisoning were looked into by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the police force. Zantjer was arrested on July 30 as a result of the investigation.

KCCI says the victim is still alive, but they took them to the hospital right away because they were having signs like breathing problems.

On August 8, there will be a meeting.

The eyedrops that were allegedly used in the poisoning had tetrahydrozoline in them, which is a common ingredient in eye drops used to reduce redness. This is how WebMD says the medicine works: “temporarily narrowing the blood vessels in the eye.”

The website says that the medicine shouldn’t be taken for more than three to four days at a time, if it is given properly. Also, kids and pets shouldn’t be able to get to it.

It has been said by Poison Control that tetrahydrozoline can make you sleepy, lower your blood pressure, and make your heart beat “dangerously slowly.”

The group also said that teens and adults who use the drug in big amounts can have symptoms that are life-threatening.
