The state just got a WARN warning from an unexpected company that they are cutting 141 jobs in Maryland.
A new WARN Notice in Maryland says that SpartanNash is closing down a plant in Landover, Maryland.
141 workers will be affected by the shutdown.
If you have more than 100 workers, you must give at least 60 days’ notice before closing a facility or letting everyone go. This is required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).
“As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we look at our supply chain network regularly to find ways to run our business more smoothly and efficiently.”
When asked about the closure, SpartanNash said in an email, “The changes we’ve made to the way we work have put us in a better position to grow and improve the support we give to our customers.”
When the layoffs start (Sept. 30), the WARN notice says, but it’s not clear if that’s also when the plant will close.
“We are committed to making sure this is a smooth transition for our Associates and customers,” the company said.
SpartanNash Military, a part of SpartanNash that sends goods to U.S. military exchanges and commissaries, said that the Landover location opened in 2012.
Nash Finch ran the building at the time. In 2013, Nash Finch merged with Spartan Stores to make Spartan Nash.
Grocery wholesalers and retailers have had a lot of changes to their distribution centers in the past few years, and this is the most current one.
Around the middle of 2022, SpartanNash told the public that it was selling four distribution centers in Indiana, North Dakota, Florida, and Ohio to an investment company called Provender Partners for almost $30 million.
In the beginning of that year, the grocery store and wholesaler extended its delivery area to the West Coast by starting to work out of Coastal Pacific Food Distributors’ 500,000-square-foot, multi-temperature distribution center in Stockton, California.
When SpartanNash bought the independent grocery wholesaler Great Lakes Foods at the beginning of last year, it added a 300,000-square-foot distribution center in Menominee, Michigan, to its list of sites.
On its website, SpartanNash names 20 distribution centers in more than 12 states. The Landover Center and the facility with Coastal Pacific Food Distributors are among them.
