How to Find Out How Much Crime There Is in a City
Based on the rate of violent crime, the most dangerous towns in California have been found. To find the violent crime rate, divide the number of reported violent crimes by the entire population and then multiply the result by 100,000. This shows how many serious crimes happen for every 100,000 people who live in the area.
Crime volume, or the amount of crimes that happen in a city, is not the same thing as crime rate. It’s not as useful to compare the total number of crimes in each place because the people who live there are different. Most of the time, a city with millions of people will have more crime than a city with only a few thousand people.
In this piece, crime rates are compared per 100,000 residents to keep things fair. This makes it easier to compare rates of serious crime.
