A news statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida says that 89 people have been charged with COVID-19 fraud.
These people tried to steal more than $84.5 million from the government.
The release says that 67 people have already been found guilty and that 22 more are still being prosecuted.
Teams have finished the return of $20 million in funds that were obtained fraudulently. The release says that more than $18 million in profits from pandemic fraud have been seized and are waiting to be forfeited in civil or criminal court.
In the release, U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg said, “The Middle District of Florida United States Attorney’s Office continues to pursue, investigate, prosecute, and recover money from those who were involved in fraud schemes designed to steal benefits meant to help Americans deal with the many effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
