Many people want Tim Scott to be Donald Trump’s vice president, and he said he will still vote to confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
The South Carolina senator said on ABC News’s “This Week” on Sunday, “I will stand by that decision and the next decision to certify the fact that Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States.”
Scott also said that “the constitution is clear” about Vice President Mike Pence’s choice to declare the 2020 election, even though Trump said that there was widespread voter fraud and that Biden was not the winner.
Since pulling out of the presidential race in November, the senator from South Carolina has been Trump’s spokesman, using his fame to get people to support the campaign.
A source told NBC News that the senator had avoided questions about whether he would approve the 2024 election no matter who won. His answer on Sunday could put him at odds with Trump, who still says the 2020 election was fixed even though he has no proof.
But last month, Scott tried to support the former president’s threats of revenge after being convicted of multiple felonies. He got into a debate with CNN’s Abby Phillip, who pushed back against the senator.
Phillip asked Scott, “Are you saying that you would not support former President Trump’s plan to appoint a special prosecutor to “go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family!” if he were elected president?
Scott then said Trump did say, “Success is the best revenge,” but Phillip replied.
Phillip told the senator, “He may have told you in private, but he’s told thousands of his supporters that he plans to go after his political enemies.”
“I don’t get how you can say that he hasn’t said that in public,” she said. “The public has seen it.”
Candidate for vice president, Scott is one of many that Trump’s team is looking into. Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, and Representative Elise Stefanik of New York are just a few of the big names.
At the Republican National Convention in July, the former president is likely to name his running mate. Most likely, Trump will be named the official GOP presidential candidate there.
