Gov. Wes Moore's Theme of Service and Patriotism Could Help Democrats in a Divided US

Last week, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore went on the campaign road for Josh Stein, the Democratic candidate for governor of North Carolina. He asked veterans to support Stein, who is running against Moore in one of the closest races for governor in the country.

If someone wants to be governor, getting support from the current governor is very important, especially if the race is close.

Stein started his “Veterans for Stein” campaign coalition at the same time Moore went to the Tar Heel State. Stein is now the attorney general.

Nineteen percent of the people who live in North Carolina are active-duty troops. The state is also home to nearly 800,000 veterans. That’s why it makes sense for politicians to work with the troops. It has a lot of power in the state.

Moore was in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2006 with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. He believes that patriotism and service shouldn’t be limited to a single political party or philosophy.

Moore has been a stumper for politicians all over the country since his successful 2022 run for governor of North Carolina. During this time, he has tried to keep Democrats in the discussions they need to be to be a competitive party across the whole country.

Moore thinks that this attempt will make a difference.

“Some things are worth fighting for, and we put our safety at risk for freedoms,” Moore told Business Insider not long ago. “Some of the freedoms are on the ballot now, including the freedom to know that reproductive health should be between a woman and their doctor.”

Moore went to Virginia in November to campaign for Democratic candidates for state legislature. He went to the military-heavy Hampton Roads area and backed soldiers like Michael Feggans of Virginia Beach, who was elected to the House of Delegates that month.

“[W]e’re pushing back against a lot of these individual forces who are trying to claim this mantle of patriotism and are actually restricting rights in the name of patriotism,” Moore told BI back then.

The country is becoming more and more divided on a political level. This gives Democrats a huge chance to win in places like North Carolina, where a lot of people are still voting for both parties.

Trump won North Carolina twice, in 2016 and 2020, but Stein won both times as attorney general in the same general election.

Moore is very optimistic about Stein’s chances this fall. He said that the attorney general shares the values that veterans are looking for, especially when it comes to things like affordable living and health care.

The governor told BI last week, “As attorney general, he has always stood up for veterans.” “And he’ll do it as governor.”
